What is Real Success to You?
It’s what every wants…. Real Success! It’s what we’re trained to go for, from birth. It’s what we receive “rewards” for, whether gifts or hugs.• What Real Success means to you depends not only upon who you are, but upon what area of your life you are considering. • In you home/ family life, success may be one thing. At work or in business it may be another, and socially it may have yet another definition. • A young woman heading off to college may well have a very different definition of success than she will many years later as the mother of 3 grown children. • A professional football player will have a very different understanding of what is success than a brain surgeon … unless the brain surgeon is operating on the football player! • Both who you are, and where you are in life’s journey make an enormous difference to what you think of when you hear the word “success.” • No two people, probably, have exactly the same vision of what is Real Success.
But what is your personal definition of Real Success? There are different levels of “success”, which we need to label differently in order to understand them. The first level of success, we will call “Achievement.” Here you achieve something you have been trying to do. But, although these may give you a temporary glow of happiness and good feeling, they are the smaller things when you look at your whole life. An achievement is when: • You pass an exam, or your drivers test • You get a promotion • You exceed last month’s sales figures • They are good, they are necessary, but they are not the stuff that really changes your life.
The next level of success is made up of many achievements. We will call it Lifetime Achievement. • You not only pass one exam, you have now gained your Masters Degree • You have not only got a promotion, but you are the CEO of the company • You have not only done well last month in sales, but you have taken your own business to become one of the most successful in your industry. These successes are recognized in the world as a whole. They bring with them definite satisfaction and often prestige. They feel good most of the time.
But you can have an amazing Lifetime Achievement without ever knowing Real Success
Real Success is what your soul craves, regardless of whether it changes your bank balance. • Real Success has to be connected to your heart and soul • It may, or may not bring monetary gain • It comes from your Passion, it is what you were “born to do” • You will give up anything for this type of success. • It gives you the drive to succeed when the odds are stacked against you • When you find your passion, you find your personal definition of real success. • Or put another way, until you find your passion, you cannot find real success.
What were you born to do? What must you do? What does your heart and soul long to see in your life long to see you do or become?
Great dancers aren’t great because of their technique: they are great because of their passion. Author unknown
Once you find your passion, you will have the drive, the nerve and the energy to do whatever it takes to achieve your goal. You will have to do it. Your whole being will cry out for you to do it. And when you do it, you will have found real success. When have you done something that gave you that deep feeling of success? What have you done that just filled your heart with satisfaction, and a knowing that you had done what you were meant to do?
Nothing great in the world has ever been accomplished without passion. Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel
There is a well known exercise to help you find where in your life you would like to find Real Success.
Imagine you are at your own funeral … or if you find that too depressing, think of yourself as very old, perhaps celebrating an important milestone birthday. Listen to what the guests are saying about you. • What you do you want to hear? • What would fill your heart with pride and joy and a deep satisfaction to hear them say? • What one thing, over all others, would you like to hear? • What would make you feel and think “Yes, I did it. I did what I came here to do”? It may be something huge that the whole world recognizes. Or it may be something that only those closest to you know anything about. That doesn’t matter. It’s what fills you with that deep, warm glow of knowing you did it. You had what it took, you gave what it demanded and you did it. Your heart is aflame with the feeling of true success. • What, more that anything else in the world, do you want to achieve in this life? • Where does you inner drive and longing want to take you? • It doesn’t matter if it seems “possible” or not. What is it? • Once you have identified it, accepted it and embraced it, the rest of your life will involve realizing it because it’s where you have to go. • It’s your destiny. Take some time to meditate, to think quietly and deeply on what true success is to you. Write down thoughts as they come to you – no matter how silly they may sound at first. Then go back and read through what you’ve written and notice the patterns. What keeps re-occurring? Your passion is in there. Look for it and you will find it. Then go out and do whatever is necessary to achieve it.
Passion, it lies in all of us, sleeping, waiting, and though unwanted, unbidden, it will stir, open it’s jaws and how. It speaks to us, guides us, passion rules us all, and we obey. What other choice do we have? Passion is the source of our finest moments. The job of love, the clarity of hatred and the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could live without passion maybe we’d know some kind of peace, but we would be hollow. Empty rooms shuttered and dank. Without passion we’d be truly dead. Joss Whedon
